I got a Cruzer flashdrive 1GB recently for my birthday. The instructions that came with it said that all you need to do is plug it in. There is also something about U3 which I do not understand. Anyhow, the bottomline is that it will not work in my computer nor in the secretary's computer. She showed me how to plug it in by using her own as an example. On My Computer, a drive shows up. But when I plug my own in ,no drive shows up on my computer nor her own.it makes a noise when it is plugged in or unplugged. We are using Windows XP and a Dell with Intel Pentium 4 and tried it in different ports. I contacted SanDisk to register it and explain my problem but got no answer or acknowledgement yet.. Do you think it is defective or is it something that can be fixed easily? My niece paid a small fortune for it; and I have thrown away the plastic wrapping although I have the box with the serial number and bar code number. Please help.

If you have XP Professional, the USB port should recognise the cruzer immediately, if not, that is a strong indicator of a problem, however not definitive.
You can force a recognition by doing an "Add Hardware" selection in Control Panel, however, try another USB drive first. If someone else's drive is not recognised in the same USB port, then its the Port. So try another port, and rule out a USB port Failure. If it does work, then put your Cruzer in, try and see if it is recognised under Explorer. If it is, try and test the drive. It might be unformatted, might be locked, could be a device driver issue on your machine.
If that fails on your PC, try looking at it on someone else's PC.
If that fails, go for a replacement. The Flashdrives are so cheap ( relatively) that spending too much time on it is basically a waste of effort. Usually, it is a case of they work, or they don't however, there are some machines that will not recognise these units for a variety of reasons especially if you are on a network.

Could be two thing

a) It needs to be formatted (generally it will show up on an 'explore' but will not be accessible. Right click its properties and choose 'format').

b) Its defective. Take it to the place you bought it (or where it was purchased for you) and ask them to plug it in. If no one knows were it came from go to the manufacture.

c) Option C.... 1G's are pretty cheap now.. $18 out here in Calif. It might not be worth all the hassel .. just buy a new one and don't tell the person that gave it to you.

good luck

It could be that there is a drive letter conflict with another drive;
To fix this:
Start
Settings
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Storage
Disk Management
Right Click on the External Hard Drive and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths'
Click on 'Change'
Change the drive letter to the next on available
Click 'Ok'
The Flash drive should show up now under 'My Computer'

I have yet to have a problem with a flash drive. Many of them require the latest operating system software. When you insert them a window should open asking what you want to do. At some point you may have dismissed the window telling it to do nothing. In that case you should always be able to go to my computer and double click on the drive there to open it.

most likely it is defective but there is one thing to why these don't work is your usb ports old like usb 1.0 if so this is why they wont work but if they are newer than that like usb 1.1 it should work check that if it is usb 2.0 or 1.1 then you are fine and u need to take it back for another one
