i don't really think you can. Apparently its a learned response. Perhaps you could try sucking the fluid into the top end of the straw yourself and folding in half to keep it there. Then place in baby's mouth so can baby can know there is a drink to be had then release.....? You know, so that juice escapes...baby gets somewhat of a surprise and then repeat perhaps tipping top end into baby's mouth next time but releasing before baby finishes??? Might be useful, or not, worked on only one of my babies, the others just used to blow bubbles and laugh!!! They still do actually, 9, 7 & 4, yay!!! Nice and messy. Hope I helped a bit......:)

It was something that took lots and lots of practice. My first son took to it very quickly at around 4 months. My second around 5 months. However, my third son it took a long time...he couldn't drink from a straw until he was around 8 mos. The only thing you can do is keep offering it. Also, when you have the straw if a drink, put your finger over it trapping the drink in the straw. Put the end of it in your baby's mouth and with your finger over the other end, have baby try to suck the fluid out. I tried that and sometimes it worked, other times it didn't!!

We would get liquid in the straw, then put it in the child's mouth, remove our finger from the opposite end, and let the liquid come out. After a bit, the child would realize straw=liquid and would start to suck. It never did take long, just a bit of patience. Just be sure your child is old enough. If they aren't drinking from a sippy or a regular cup, its too early for a straw.

Babies have the instinct to suck when something is put in their mouths. Try just sticking the straw in the baby's mouth and see what they do next. The first time my son saw a straw he ut his mouth on it from watching his father and drank from it on his own. Then he went through a phase where he wouldn't drink anything unless it was in a cup with a straw in it. He is now able to drink from a glass without assistance and minimal spillage. He recently turned 2.

Our son just kind of caught on, I was never trying to teach him. When we would go to dinner somewhere I would give him some of my water out of my straw by placing my finger on the top of the straw after I'd drawn up some water. We would then place the straw in his mouth and he'd suck the water out. Eventually he started drinking out of a straw on his own.

well my daughter started drinking from a straw when she was around nine months old, I think she learned from watching her father and I drink from one. Thats really the only way to teach a child the best is by showing them,,

Try the Rubbermaid "Juice box" bottles. You can give a little squeeze to squirt the water into their mouth through the straw. All my kids used these from an early age. Our doc was always suprised how early they learned to drink from a straw.
