I suppose you can take that position, but you might provide 2 references:
Why is the base there in the first place.
What is the US paying to have the base there. I assume it is not the kindness of Greece that allows it.

I can see the advantages to the US but what are the advantages to you?

Its funny....you say they dont leave 1 red cent but yet we already paid the lease. Theres a lot of cents. I guess NONE of the Military and civilian personell there dont go to the restarants or the night clubs or use the taxis etc??

The Phillipines said the same thing. We pulled out...Mt Pintubo(sp?) blew up and now they are screaming because thier economy is in the toliet without the 500million USD we pumped into the local system every year.

Moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for

I was in Greece this past Spring - and spent some time on (indeed, lovely) Crete.

I didn't even know there was a base there. I certainly didn't see anybody raping children.

However, the U.S. gets leases on land from other countries for bases (we don't just move in). I suppose when the lease agreement is up, we will either move out or pay more money for the land in another lease.

I think you should stop worrying about the Americans - and enjoy the gorgeous island!

I would like to know more; I wasn't aware the USA had a base on Crete but can appreciate the strategic importance. Why is the base horrible?
Would you have prefered the Germans remaining from WWII?
Most Americans would prefer that we did not need bases overseas (but we do not have a perfect world).

we americans will do that as soon as everyone stops running to us and saying someone is bullying me make them stop.
Want us gone but if you was invaded you sure would want us there fighting for you.
Makes me mad when someone from another country doesn't realize what kind of scarfices are made everyday so that unthankful people can have the honor of saying that americans need to mind our own business. If we would mind our own business if you would stop yelling we need help.

Why are you so worried about it when Crete is not actually 'your' island as you state in a previous question you are a New Zealand resident, wishing to find someone to pay your way to return there.

Hopefully soon. That way we can spend our tax dollars on something productive like on the US instead of tiny little islands the majority of Americans care very little about.

Reality is, it's a strategic position. So never.

We're trying to get out of there now...

Once we find that plug in the bottom of the island and can pull it..

We'll go as we watch the island sink

As soon as you whiners show a little gratitude to us for keeping your smelly little country un-Nazified and un-Sovietized and for giving you $$ after the war to rebuild.

A little gratitude might go a long way. I won't hold my breath.
