You pronounce it like 'er' and an example is Lowen , meaning lions, which you would say like 'lerven'. Sorry about the missing umlaut. Don't know how to put one on.

it depends on the language. In German the umlut adds an e to a vowel (except the vowels e and i), so if your keyboard doesn't have the '..' umlaut symbal on it you can use the vowel+e instead, so the sounds you get are:

a+umlaut=ae-like the english sound ai, as in maid, bade or raid.

u+umlaut=ue like the english sound oo as in moo, spooky or gooey

o+umlaut=oe like the English sound 'ir' as in stir, flirt or skirt.

Examples of German words with these sounds include:

a without an umlaut:

Fahren- to drive/travel/go (pronounced far-r'n*).

*This sound is a bit like the (what sounds like a) silent e in the word foreign or current.

a with an umlaut:

Das Maedchen-Girl (pronounced Maid-sh'n*)

*This sound is a bit like saying the fish'n part of fish'n'chips.

o without an umlaut:

Ich wollte-I wanted (pronounced voll-ter*)

*These sounds are like saying 'voll' as in roll/toll but with a 'v' instead of an r/t at the beginning of the word and 'ter' as in the word printer.

o with umlut:

Ich koennte (pronounced kirn-ter*)

These sounds are like saying 'K' as in kick, 'ir' as in the word stir, 'n' as in the word nut and 'ter' as in the word printer.

u without umlaut

Die Kirche wurde im 2006 gebaut-The church was built in 2006. (Wurde is pronounced vorder as in 'V' and the word order).

u with umlaut

Wenn ich Zeit haette, wuerde ich essen-If I had time, I would eat.

(Wuerde is pronounced like the word murder but with a v instead of a m at the beginning).

This is a long answer but I hope it helps!

It's an "er" sound. If you know French, it's like the vowel part of "oeuf". Or if not, it's quite like the first vowel in "purple".

Assuming you are WORD then click on the INSERT tab then click on Symbols. That should help. Here's an example...
