Have you tried searching some of the sites on the interent, like findagrave.com to see if your friend is listed in there? If you can narrow down where the person lived, died, and was buried the local library will often have old newspapers microfilmed. Many times they'll have the names indexed so you'll know where to begin. Once you find the obituary you're looking for in most cases you can print off the obituary for a small fee.
