I think if teachers send home daily reports informing parents of how their child or children are doing on a daily basis would help parents to keep intact of behavior, I think teachers should get parents involved by having grade school children take books home on a weekly basis for reading and make the parent read with the children or test the children's knowledge of what they read by asking them questions and have the parents sign a sheet saying they did see their children read the book.
If I was a parent I would want more days when the parents could come and sit in our classroom discussions and actually see their children participating...

Good luck getting the parents to cooperate. Out of a classroom of 30, I typically saw about 5 parents on any kind of regular basis. Sometimes it seems as though the parents(or guardians) are non-existent. Teachers are almost always doing what they can for the benefit of the children. Why else would anyone dedicate the majority of their life for little pay? Not all parents seem to have the same agenda.

To begin with it should be a cooperative effort. The teacher is ultimately on the line of fire when the students are not taught according to the state mandates. Our teaching staff contains a number of high quality personnell and a number of highly qualified lousy teachers. In many cases the teaching staff are working too many unpaid hours with too many children attempting to fill and "8 ounce cup" with "13 ounces of fluids". Our children are expected to be able to handle the curriculum no matter what their past experiences have been, no matter what their abilities are, and no matter what they did or did not learn from the previous year. The State and Federal governments take money away when these students are not able to perform no matter what the reason. This is NOT RIGHT!! I believe that a number of our teachers attempt to work in small groups and one-on-one when they are able to do so to assist in helping those students that want to achieve. I also believe that giving each student a daily report is a rediculous idea! I had about 160 students come through my classroom on a daily basis. I did send daily reports on a number of students so that their parents would be able to keep track of their daily progress, and it HELPED! I also believe that if every teacher were to be given training on working individually with those who really needed help that they would become more effective teachers.

I believe that our parents also need to work daily with their children on study skills and on working with their studies on a regular basis. I had too many students that were raised by the downtown merchants. They were not welcomed home by their parents and were not told to be home by any given time. Their parents were either in the local bars, playing cards with friends, or getting HIGH. This is a terrible thing to say but a number of those parents did a disservice to their children by keeping them at all. If a number of our parents would choose to work with the schools as a classroom aide and assist the teacher in working with those students that need individual attention then the remainder of the class could get "regular instruction". A number of parents demand that their children get equal access to the classroom but do nothing to assist in the instruction of those children even though they may not be able to ever read and write in their lifetime! Teachers are to do all things related to life in an 8 hour day without being the parent of that child. I am going to quit because I believe that I am rambling. I appologize for that. So..
There are numerous documented benefits and advantages of teaching children to read early on, and teaching them to reading using phonics and phonemic awareness instructions. It is clear that early language and reading ability development passes great benefits to the child as they progress through school at all grades, and that early language and reading problems can lead to learning problems later on in school.
