Gauthier said the Canadiens have about $43 million counting toward the cap, but it was closer to $43.3 million with Lapierre's $562,500 NHL salary included. And each day he stayed in the NHL ate a little away from their account.

He said teams have to leave cap space in case a goaltender is injured, because while a team can manage if a skater gets hurt, a goalie must be replaced.

And if there is a run of injuries later on, it will cost even more when players are called up from the minors.

"We have 49 games to go and you don't want to flirt with the cap too soon," Gauthier said.

Easy. The minute the Christmas holidays are over and player movement in the NHL is unfrozen again.

That's sometime in early January I believe. There's no way that they can keep this guy out of the line-up frankly. They just sent him down to save room on the cap, but soon they will realize that it's more worth it to lose Murray or Downey, than it is to NOT have LaPierre in the line-up.

He'll be back up. 100% guarantee.

No worries they've got 22 healthy guys playing right now and doing very well. If needed, he'd be called back for his job well done. Go HABS.

I think it depends on how close the Canadiens are to the salary cap,
because you probably realize he wasn't being sent down because of his performance. He was being sent down because the Canadiens were creeping very close to the salary cap. They needed more room for manoeuvering in case they need to make a trade for
a playoff run.
