it's your idle air motor or actuator as GM calls it. They're natorious for going bad and causing your problem.

In answer to wormee38, the vehicle does not have a carb, it is fuel injected. all engine functions are controlled by the P.C.M.(powertrain control module, the computer) this is required on O.B.D.II vehicles. If timing is off that much, you would probably be experiencing other driveability problems. At any rate, you should have a qualified technition have a look at it before it causes more damage. You might want to look at the oil pressure switch, this MAY cause the engine to shut off if it is defective, or the oil pressure drops at idle(with engine warmed-up). This condition may be due to wear internally causing said pressure drop on a worn engine. Hope this helps, good luck.

GM uses a oil pressure switch to turn off the fuel pump if your engine looses oil pressure.
If the oil light comes on, the there's not enough oil pressure in the engine. The pressure switch sees this drop in pressure, turns off your fuel pump, and the engine dies from lack of fuel.
Check your engine oil level. If that's OK, then you may want to see a professional.

If this problem is occurring more when the engine is warm, it's possible, the ignition module may be going out. Is there a check engine lamp coming on when this is occurring? If not, it may be, a simple fuel filter replacement might correct your problem. If it's an ignition problem, the check engine lamp will come on or start to flash. If your lamp comes on there is a code which can tell you what the problem is, just take it to your nearest Autozone and they can tell you what the code means.

It might just need a tuneup. Sounds like it's dying because the rpm's drop too low. Easiest fix is to boost your idle speed, but that will waste some gas, and not fix the actual problem. Try carb cleaner first. [fuel injector cleaner]

You could have an oil pressure problem. Also there are several reasons why that problem is happening. You should take it to a mechanic to have it checked out.

Sounds like maybe the timing is off, or maybe the carburetor needs adjusted, just some ideas that I would look for.
