Actually it was Sir Isaac Newton who pondered about this when an apple fell on his head. After much study he came up with a formula that stated that the force of attraction between any 2 bodies in the universe is m1*m2/d^2. This is called the gravitational force and this is what makes objects to fall down towards the earth.
If our moon were to be stationary, it too would crash down on the earth, but because of the centrifugal force generated by its rotation around the earth balancing with the gravitational force between the earth & moon, it is staying put !

According to our present day understanding of Relativity and Quantum mechanics, follows a simplified explanation.

" Anything" in the universe is either matter or energy. Matter itself is a form of "condensed energy" ( E=MC2)

Matter is made by atoms, atoms by smaller particles. It appears that these smaller particles when one is in the vicinity of another, exchange an ultra small particle called graviton.

The multiplicative effect of these gravitons, creates space. The space created is also Bent by the sheer amount of energy and/or matter in its vicinity.

In other words a massive celestial body such as the sun or the earth, will bend space. Our tendency is perpetual motion through space, and because it is warped towards the core of the earth, anything will get closer to the center and gives the impression that it is falling.

Likewise the moon is "falling on the earth" and in turn the earth is falling into the sun. Why does the moon do not hit the earth, well it would if the earth were standing still. But the earth is moving and hence the circular motion. Likewise the earth to the sun and the sun to the center of the galaxy.

Some things fall down because the cat knocked them off the shelf.

Some things fall down because they are drunk.

Some things fall down because you are clumsy.

But ultimately, EVERYTHING falls because Earth is a huge source of gravitational attraction.

things fall down when you throw because of the gravitational force. if you throw anything on earth it obviously comes down due to the gravitational force and if you throw anything on the moon or any other planet the object would not come down easily because it doesn't have proper gravity.
