check the level of your antifreeze in radiator, sometimes your problems are caused by not enough antifreeze in radiator.

My guess is the thermostat is sticking. If it is stuck in the open position the water will flow and flow and the motor will not be able to heat it up. When it is stuck in the closed position the temp of the water will get too high and the gauge will go into the red zone. Get this replaced before your car over heats. Also have them flush your coolant system at the same time...makes a world of difference. Of course it you just had a water pump replaced chances are they did that already.

Coolant level is probably low.
After filling up the coolant system for the first time, air gets trapped in the engine block.

As soon as you start it, the water pump forces the coolant thru the system and bleeds most of the air to the radiator, and upper radiator hose.

If the engine is NOT hot right now, remove the radiator cap and top it off while the engine is idleing. That way you know the cooling system is full.

Everything should be fine after that.

I believe MRknowitall is on the money, with the car cool, open the cooling system, radiator cap and add coolant, then start the motor, turn on the heat and let the engine run, watch the coolant level, add more as necessary, it may take a few minutes as the engine warms up and the thermostat opens.

1) Check coolant level, if you have a reservoir, make sure the fluid is up to the "Fill" line. If not, when you remove the radiator cap, you should be able to see fluid, if not, fill the radiator. (ONLY TAKE RADIATOR CAP OFF AFTER THE ENGINE HAS COOLED OFF)

2)Check thermostat

3) Ensure no air is in the coolant system

4) Check heater core
