No animal has a PURPOSE; they have all developed to reproduce their genes in the best way possible. The adaptions that Humans have made over their evolutionary development has left them top of the food chain. It is just that those crucial adaptations, being bipedal, opposing thumbs and a large brain etc. has left it all the capabilities to change, as well as ruin, their environment.
Its probably worth thinking that to have such drastic change in our evolution, our species must have overcome some immense problems. Lets hope we can continue to overcome the problems yet to face such as the environment.

Since man is an integral part of Earth, it would be more scientific to ask The Purpose of the planet and the Solar System we inhabit? To accept there is a Purpose frees the intellect to consider how most to contribute to it, and to make best use of our lifespan towards such a tangible goal for each of us. Clearly if mankind combines mental resources and biophysical capabilities, it will achieve maximum potential for understanding, unity and progress toward Purpose.

We are entertainment for the universe. Earth is a reality show. Don't you watch "South Park"?
Mankind is destroying some environments and species, but mankind is also saving some environments and species. Its a "mixed bag".

The entire purpose of mankind on earth is perfectly summed up in the Catechism: we are all here "to know God, to love Him, and to serve Him". Anything not at least indirectly aimed to those ends is at best superfluous, and quite possibly from Satan.

Destruction of the human race? There's like 6,000,000,000 people on earth. If one out of two people suddenly died, there would still be 3 billion people.

Hm. The answers to this question will be seemingly completely subjective. IMHO, the answer can be found in the Westminster Shorter Catechism:
"What is the chief end of man? The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever."
Not that we're doing that by any stretch of the imagination.

thousands of men breathe, move, and live;pass off the stage of life and are heard of no more. Why?they did not a particle of good in the world;none were blessed, none wrote a line, not a word they spoke could be recalled, and so they perished -their light went out in darkness, and they were not remembered more than the insects of yesterday. If you want to be remembered as something and want to do something special then-
Do not heap up wealth in abundance,do not grind the faces of the poor ;consider the sweat on of their brows.Do not thrive on oppression, lest the ruin of your brother disturb your heart.O man !Live for something.Live for the welfare of others!!!!!!

there's no purpose; there's no plan; there's no invisible sky critter. At suitable we are an twist of destiny in Time and area; a determination of loosely blended molecules responding to our environment. ~
