Some times you get gifts from co-workers or friends a week or so before Christmas day. Do you open them right then and there, or do you put them under the tree and wait? If the gift-giver is there, is it polite to ask? I'm always torn on how to handle such situations...

If the person gives you the gift, I always open it in front of them. They want to see your reaction. If it is mailed to me, I usually wait until Christmas to open it and then send them a thank you note.

If they bring the gift to your house, ask them.If you are given the gift at their home, you should open, you probably will not see them on Christmas.I would trade the gifts and ask.The co-workers should expect that you will open then thank them for the gift....hope this helps.....

I always ask the person if they would like me to open the gift then. Most people want to see the look on your face when you open their gift.

I don't think it really matters unless the present is barking or meowing. We used to wait and were allowed to open 1 gift on Christmas Eve. If you choose not to open in front of them, make sure you still say thanks or send a nice thank-you card.

I think it is fine to opoen the gift right away unless they have asked you otherwise. Especially if you will not be seing this person until after Christmas. That was you can thank them properly...and regift if its horrible...lol

in the US, its standard etiquette to open a gift in front of the giver, so they can see if you like it and you can properly thank them for it.

I'm about through. I cannot get that idiot to give out my early Xmas. I rely on someone there to do that. What should I do?
