No, merely saving an infected program on a computer will not infect it. In order for the malware to infect the computer, it must be executed.
However, in some cases it can be executed not only when you install it (or even just double-click on it), but even when you just *view* it (e.g., if it is a specially prepared picture that exploits a vulunerability in your picture viewer). So, you better be extra careful with malicious programs and keep them off your computer.

It is safer to scan the saved program with an uptodate anti virus and anti spyware program. My AVG AV had detected Adware Generic in many of the programs that I downloaded from the Internet. My Kapersky Internet Security had also detected malwares in CDs given free with computer magazines. To be safe I shredded the programs to bits with AVG Anti Spyware's shredder.

It depends on the nature of the virus, spyware, etc. Spyware is active as soon as you download a program. Viruses generally have to be executed and trojan hide in programs and can self execute at any time.

We shouls not click on a program whicjh is doubtful. Then it will automatically get installed in the PC. You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
