life, and risk, and monopoly

If you really enjoyed Monopoly (arguably a suitable claimant to the evergreen title) then I would recommend Power Grid.

Like Monopoly's property grab, the objective is to score points by taking prized cities and power stations to power said cities.

Gameplay, however focuses completely on strategy and tactical play instead of dice roll.

Unlike Puerto Rico where there is little player interaction, Power Grid's auction system lends much to the game play.. Players will bid for the power station of their choice to accurately reflect the true value of the station.

A mini market reflects fluctuating fuel prices based on actual demand and supply. Eg, if everyone is running coal power stations and buying up coal, the price will go up, giving strong incentives to invest in power stations that use other forms of energy.

Finally, turn order actually affects the game a great deal and players have to plan their acquisitions as the player with the most cities and biggest power plants will start their turn after everyone else (high prices for fuel and poor selection of cities)

Blindly building cities and grabbing the best power stations is the surest way to lose. And I suspect that many players will actually appreciate a more subtle and strategic route to victory.

I am a big kid at heart. My sister and I, who is 17 haha (another big kid) used to play Clue FX all the time when I was still living at home. It's clue with an electronic board. I think Mad Gab is also very fun as well as scattegories. Those two are especially fun for drunken nights hehehe\

Also, my favorite from childhood was Go For Broke. I can't find it anywhere now. But it was the opposite of Monopoly. You tried to be the first to lose all your money through different gambling ventures and such.

It's a relative answer. Everybody has different favorites and it can change according to the situation.

My favorite game by far is the ancient asian board game go. Easier to learn than chess, more difficult to master, great handicapping system, lots of history.

For more social situations I like Trivial Pursuit and Settlers of Cattaan.

What's best depends on what you are into and who you're with.

Scattergories! It's great! You have a game card with different catergories then you roll the dice- it will land on a letter of the alphbet and you have about 60 seconds to think of an answer for all 12 catergories but it has to start with that letter that you rolled. You always end up laughing your way through the game because under pressure people come up with hilarious answers!

Haven't played a board game in ages - - but if I'd have to sit down as an adult to play a board game. I would say Jestures (the one where you are acting out the words on cards and people have to guess the word) or Taboo (you have to get the people to say the word without using certain words that are listed on the cards) They are kinda similar both guessing games...

Heroscape, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride... hard to choose a Best one out of those four... they're all great but totally different from each other. Apples to Apples is probably the best game available right now, but alas, tis a card game.

According to the boardgame geeks who vote on these things, it's Puerto Rico. Never heard of it? Not surprising since it's not mass-marketed like Monopoly, etc. But trust us geeks, it's a great game (as are all the games at the top of this list): http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=game&sortby=rank
