Being able to read well is NOT a clear indicator that a child can spell or has the necessary skills to be able to spelling unfamiliar words. A really good place to look for the steps children take when developing into a competent speller can be found in 'playing with sounds' a downloadable booklet, used in schools, made by the dfes. If you type playing with sounds into google its the first and second links.
It is worth noting that it is not set out according to age - it is done by the skills the child has learnt - you need to analyse their independent spelling to be able to work out which step they are on...some children may be advanced for their age and others may be behind.
The screening tasks can also be found on google - spelling screening dfes gave me the site and again they can be downloaded and printed out.

Oh dear - not sure who is worst here -the question setter, or the two responses that only realised that speel was incorrectly spelt; missing the fact that progrees was also spelt wrong.
Or this could be a complete double bluff and the question setter is playing us all for fools.

2 years is possibly an suitable age hollow. My brother and that i are 4 years aside (it replaced into in basic terms meant to be 2, yet my mother and father had to objective for a year in the past finally getting pregnant with him). i think of it replaced into hard on the two one people through fact he hated having to attend 4 years to do the failings I have been given to do first. And whilst i replaced into youthful i could no longer pass some places without bringing him alongside. We did play at the same time, yet once I reached 10 or eleven the age distinction grew to grow to be greater of a undertaking from then on. we are close now, yet did no longer have a super relationship till i replaced into out of highschool. Our age hollow possibly could have been greater handy if we've been the two the comparable intercourse. in spite of the shown fact that it quite is a robust adventure having a brother through fact all my pals have been ladies.

If they can reed well you can use a normal test and then fudge the maths to give you a score. If they can only reed a bit then the score will not mean much as it will tell you more about the teaching method/programme than reflect the child's skill at speeling.
