I got married at age 18 and now I'm a divorcee (big frickin mistake getting married). The thought of marriage basically terrifies me now, so I see nothing wrong with two people never getting married.

I agree with you 100%. As long as two people are bonded and love each other unconditionally then what does it matter if you are married or not. A majority of marriages that I have seen either have ended in divorce, the spouse has cheated, or both parties are completely miserable. Marriage is NOT necessary in my book. Its a nice fairy tail but the endings aren't always happy.

I agree. I think co-habitation is the toughest part of marriage. My fiance and I have been doing that successfully for almost 7 years now. We have already bought the house, the car, have a dog, the whole thing, except for the actual marriage license, and we are perfectly happy. At this point, the biggest advantage of getting "legally" married is that I wouldn't have to pay a fee to get him put on the deed for our house, since my mom co-signed the mortgage for me. We even get a discount already on our car insurance. People tend to confuse a "wedding" with a "marriage". We just haven't got around to the "wedding" part yet. So I am with you all the way on that one.

i believe that the best situation is to live with someone who you intend to eventually marry. granted, for some people marriage isn't necessary, but for lifetime couples it is, if only for legality purposes. for example, if a person in an unwed couple dies, then they may not be able to collect life insurance, it would just go to the next of kin. if the title of the home is in the dead person's name, then the other person would have to go to court in order to keep the home. another example, if something happened to me before my fiance and i got married, then my fiance would have no legal rights to my daughter, even though he's the only father that she knows, and she would have to go back to her biological father (whom she barely even knows). but aside from all the legal stuff, marriage is the ultimate pledge of commitment, to swear before everybody to spend the rest of your life with this person. it's not just a piece of paper, it's sharing all of your life with another person.

If you love someone that much why not commit to them for the rest of your lives. If you can't commit then you don't love them as much as you think you do. I for one still believe in marriage and raising kids and growing old with someone. I know these days that seems to be a thing of the past.

I do not believe there is anything wrong with living together before getting married. In fact, I think that is a good idea. With a 50% divorce rate, there is no guarantee that it will work. This gives you a chance to really get to know the person and see if your personalities mesh.

A live-in girlfriend whom you intend to marry. That "piece of paper" will come in mighty handy for legal situations later on. And if you love them that much, why NOT have a piece of paper, if it doesn't matter?

I say live together, THEN get married, if you want to.
The "piece of paper" matters a whole lot if you have kids or property, or any other assets....
I think people who marry without living together first are foolish. Too many "surprises" later...
