Anything from Apple and you can't go far wrong.

Expensive but soooooo much better than anything else on the market. My eldest son just got a Macbook and it blows every other comp I have seen straight out of the water, reliable, fast, easy to use etc etc.

Basically, you get what you pay for - I'd definitely recommend saving up to buy something decent if you want it to last.

I think all brands have good and bad points. Plus, you may order a certain brand, but there are always bad apples in the bunch, no matter which one you order. I think that http://www.amazon.com and http://www.newegg.com give some more detailed reviews about computers and many are from experienced computer users. I would go there and look at a few you are interested in and cross reference them. Also, make sure your needs fit the computer. If you are a more novice user, make sure they have good technical support as well.

From Personal Experience: We have an HP that has lasted for forever (it is 700 mghz [or .7 ghz] to put the time frame into perspective computers nowadays are over 4 times the speed). On the other hand, we also have 2 e-machines, and a power book (mac). My e-machine's motherboard died and I replaced it, along w/ a new cpu, the other e-machine has lasted 3+ years now with no problems. I would say go with a higher quality brand than e-machine though. Also, if you go into a store to buy it [e.g. bestbuy], do your research, don't let them up sell you on silly little extra gadgets and nonsense that they say you need for your computer.

Consumer Reports, in THREE consecutive magazines, reviewing the different computers by their classes (laptop, desktop) says:
1. Macs cost LESS than a comparable Dell, because:
A. The Dell comes with all TRIAL software that you must pay for AFTER the purchase of theDell!
B. The Dell and the Mac use much of the same chips, accessories, but, the Mac is warranteed better, and Mac provides better support to the customer.

2. The Mac comes with PROFESSIONAL class software, and, can also run GNU/Linux, BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) and Microsoft Operating Systems, and ALL the programs and applications of all the above!

3. The Macs are #1 for customer support.
I would go for a Mac http://apple.com (they also list 'refurbs' with full factory warrantees!).

I do know that from all the benchmark testing done by 50 different industry 'experts' that Microsoft runs upto 50X SLOWER than Mac OS X or any of the BSD or GNU/Linux OSes!

I run 8 Macs, 5 Dells, 9 Compaqs, 5 Acers, and 40 'white boxes'.
Only Two can run WinXP Pro.

The Macs run what they come with, versions of Unix; the rest run http://pclinuxos.com which is what makes any X86 computer run like it is a Mac. I got all of them from donations and curbside, or purchased them used.

In a nutshell, you have the variables of selection of Operating Systems, plus, computer makers.

Who do you trust the most? Which system has the best support, best history of customer service? Which is virus proof? Which comes with the most complete software?

I say, and Consumer Reports notes, that it is Mac!

Resale value after 4 years? Dell sells for Zero to 30% of it's new retail prices... Macs get 40% to 70% of retail. I know because I work in both worlds, servicing and selling new/used PCs, and Macs!

Dell, they are good computers and the customer service is great. If you do have any problems they are easy to reach. If something does break on the computer they will have another one shipped to you in a few days. I have two Dells, a laptop and a desk top, and I love them. No problems with the computers, only had one problem with a DVD drive and that was fixed within a few days of Dell being notified.

If you are buying a desktop, Dell or HP. If you are buying a laptop, go to a store and buy a Toshiba. I ordered a Dell Laptop and have not been happy with it at all. You can't see it before you buy it and I bought a screen upgrade that I didn't really need but I didn't know it until I got it. I wish I had sent the dell back right away.

If longevity what you are looking for, I would go with a Dell. Most upgrades I do myself to include hardware. I am on my third one. I dropped one of mine from a height of about 9 feet and it still worked. When I took it apart fix a few broken pieces here and there, that was easy too. Even the most basic dell system can handle even the most advanced software packages.

If you are a gamer or into video I would say Dell of MAC.

Enterpise business purpose, Gateway or Dell once again.

Stay away from Toshiba & HP. They still have lousy wireless cards.

I used to have a Dell and it lasted forever but it was outdated, that was 8 years ago...I think it was a 800Mhz drive, nothing compared to what they have now. I got mine off the internet and you can put the features you want on it that fits your needs without the sales people at the store trying to get you to upgrade everything (for more money)
