We have a pickle ornament that we were given as a gift, which is supposed to be the last one you put on the tree, and good luck for the house and the family in the new year. I don't know about the gift for the one who finds it though. I think it may be a German tradition.

We're all grown now & the first ornament my parents gave each of us was a pickle for our trees. So each 'kid' in my family has a pickle on their tree and my parents have one on theirs too. The best thing is, the person who finds the pickle on my Dad's tree gets $$$!

We used to do it until the pickle ornament broke one year in storage. It was fun when we were younger, but we decided we were old enough not to need it anymore. I want to find another pickle ornament to give to my brother since he and his wife just had their first child, so they can start the tradition with their family.

LOL, my nana has done that in her tree every year since I can remember. Now that there is about 20 grandkids and 30 great-grandkids, we actually do the ornament search broken into age groups.

I have no idea what the background behind that tradition might be.
