You need to be checking throughout the month so that you know what your cervix feels like normally and you can compare.
When you are ovulating, your cervix is "SHOW" which means:
Soft
Most of the month your cervix feels firm, like the tip of your nose. When you are ovulating, it feels softer, more like your cheek.
High
This is obviously a comparitive thing. Your cervix will feel higher up and harder to reach when you are ovulating.
Open
Most of the month, the os (opening to your cervix) feels kind of like a little dimple or indentation in the middle of your cervix. When you are ovulating, it will feel more like a little hole into which you might even be able to insert your fingertip.
Wet
When you are ovulating, you'll have lots of cervical mucous. The "good" kind of CM is refered to as "egg white cervical mucous." It is stretchy and resembles the consistency of egg whites.
Hope this helps!

This is my standard answer......... go get a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler
This book will help you with all of your menstrual and conception questions. It’s for all women - not just women trying to conceive. It covers everything from temperature to mucus checking, etc.. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive – or not! It tells you how to figure out your cycle and what to expect. My husband and I tried for a year to conceive and nothing happened. The first month I used the book we conceived right away. Now I am due Feb 2. It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths!

Make a kissy face with your lips. Then put the tip of your finger on your mouth.
That is how your cervix will feel when your ovulating...soft and slightly open.
Put your finger on the tip of your nose...that is how it feels when your not ovulating.

The very tip of your finger will barley dip into the end of your cervix. Like what your lips feel like when you whistle but smaller.

Why would you check your cervix? Your ovaries will feel a little tender and a "pinching" sensation when you ovulate.
