Yes and why is big such a small word?
Why there an 's' in lisp?
Why is dyslexic so hard to spell?
Why is 'gullible' not in the dictionary?

English is a mish-mash of a lot of other languages. I'm glad I learned it when I was young, because I would not have the patience for it now.

I wish I can remember where I heard this but:
Why is the word "Dictionary" in the dictionary? You know what it means because you're using it, and if you need to know how to spell it, you can just look on the cover..

'cuz if you spelt it fonetiks it would look totally wrong. And the f sound is spelled ph because that makes the word sound write. Email me to get more info; I cant really write it all here.

because phone means sound and you spell phone with a ph not an f, plenty of words are spelt differently to how they are said, partly due to the evolution of language over thousands of years

The Greek letter phi was actually pronounced as a P followed by an H, as in FLOPHOUSE. Proof is that Latin already had an F, but transliterated it from the Greek alphabet into PH.
