I loved getting books at 5 and at 10! the 10 year old would love the Little House on the Prairie series. its like 5 books in a set and I adored them at 10. Or the Nancy Drew series too. GREAT for both of them! Still to this day id kill for books at Christmas! Merry Christmas and totally pass along the gift of reading!

Books are always a good gift for kids, congratulations for having such good taste! If you have trouble choosing, kids age 5 and age 10 are old enough to appreciate being able to choose their own books using a gift card. My boys always loved having "free money" to pick their own books at the bookstore; it's also a fun outing after the holidays when everyone is bored.

I don't think all 5 year olds can read at that age. Also, unless you know a child very well you won't know what KIND of book he likes to read anyway. 5 year olds do better with toys like trucks or legos.
10 year olds like DVDs - both my 10 year old nephews requested DVDs for Christmas. One wanted the new Ice Age movie and the other wanted a DVD of dirt bike races.
Kids are tough - Good luck

A book is always an appropriate gift for any age, actually. 5 year olds love books, though. 10 year old kids like activity related items....active toys, games, crafts, etc. Have fun buying!

5 yo would definitly like toys, 10 yo like toys, but what I did with my sons was the weekend after thanksgiving we went to the mall to make our christmas list to give to santa, we walked around with a notepad and they told me what they wanted, this was good because it made them solidfy a short list, not (I want everything), plus as we shopped we pointed out things they wanted to get for mom/stepmom. I then had a Shopping list (made a copy of santas letter) and gift ideas for the grandparents for the boys.
We have been doing this every year, it is our daddy day at the mall.

Dinotopia for the five year old (he or she will love the pictures and not outgrow it for a while, you may have to read it to them originally) Ten year olds, Harry Potter if they do not have all of them, Otherwise the type of things they are interested in depending if they are a boy or girl.

depending on if the 10 year old is a boy or a girl then it depends on what to get them! i have a 10 year old cousin and he is really into alot of music and games. so i got him a bunch of cds and some games for his ds and playstation. now if its a girl then you should get her sme of that little girly makeup or get her some cute little clothes. and to answer your other question yes a book would be fine for a 5 year old. my little sister had a christmas party and that what we got her to exchange for their party.

Books are a fabulous idea. My son likes for me to read books to him that have firemen and firehouses (his daddy is a fireman). (he's four). Ten year olds can be picky. Maybe a gift card to somewhere that has music and books so that they can choose what's interesting to them.
