Just for Fun: I live in CT, where we also have civil unions. We are entitled to share health benefits, have right of inheritance, have child custody rights, and - as my partner is a state employee - I am eligible for his pension upon his death.
Please explain exactly how visiting an attorney would have gained those rights for us?
Civil unions are NOT equal - but they're a step in the right direction.

Until all the benefits offered married couples including Social Security gay unions are nothing more then legally binding contracts that offer nothing you can not already negotiate with an attorney ..

Remember, this was mandated by the New Jersey Supreme Court. It's not like the gov. is doing this on his/her own.
But, of course, it's the right decision. Equality is something to be taken seriously.
