If you go to any bookstore and look in the computer section, look for books that teach the A+ certification. Some will have the DVD with the book. The A+ certification is the way to go. It is designed to be self taught and then you can go for the certification exam. When you get you A+ certificate, it's got more credibility than any courses taken at school because it is a recognized international standard.

Learning computers requires hands on experience. I began my career in 1993 with Intel-based 8088 machines running Microsoft DOS. When I went to school for electronics we troubleshooted these systems down to the component level. Back than we didn't replace mainboards, we fixed them.

There are three pieces to learning computers.

1. The operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac)
2. The hardware
3. How items 1 and 2 work together

Even home users that work with this stuff everyday only know about 10% of what is actually out there. You don;t really understand the other 90% until you work in the field.

Sure you can buy books and learn how to build your own computer but keep in mind it will be a long road.
