There are a number of reasons, but the biggest reason is due the fact that the government not being able to control it and tax it. They used the excuse that it was a narcotic to make it illegal and because it can be grown so easily, they can't control it, kind of like back during prohibition. They were running all over the place busting up liquor stills and arresting people, because they were not able to collect taxes on the booze.

Because it is difficult to TAX $$$$$$$$ and Regulate If there was a way for government to get its cut it would have been legal a long time ago. Alcohol is a drug ETOH Cigarretes are drugs NICOTINE. Thc The main ingredient in pot is in my opinion is better for medicinal reasons than both combined. Conservatives think that alcohol is best but that is because it has been widely accepted from past generations but guess what these generations are dying off and the future looks different

The cotton industry lobbied heavily against it in the 30's along with tobacco, oil, and pharmacuetical companies. It basically would put the GNP back into the hands of the average farmers and it threatened these industries then and now. Most money now is involved with the war on drugs and keeping it illegal makes more money than legalizing it now.

Strait laced pseudo-religious out dated thinking that has caused the drug war and still doesn't realize that cigarettes are a thousand times more dangerous. But legalized it would be just another thing that big government grabs some of the profits from like tobacco.

If they (The Government) can't tax it then we (The Good People) can't smoke it. I don't see what the big damned deal is - our lovely founding father George Washington grew hemp and most likely smoked it. Here we are years later and we are being persecuted for it. LEGALIZE POT NOW!!!!!

It's called the "tyranny of do-gooders". They distort the truth and attack your freedom to protect you from yourself. Smoking bans, trans-fat bans, lawsuits against fast food establishments, and even minimum wage laws are all examples of people tyrannically imposing their benevolent and enlightened totalitarianism upon the rest of us.
