Because it reinforces the good feeling someone gets when they do what they're expected and encourages them to do more than what's expected. I can't separate this out without mentioning God; He rewards us all the time for things that He also expects us to do because He loves us. I guess that's basically it for me.

It is all about motivation. To expect something to happen, there has to be a motivation. The process of expectation requires it. Look at it this way, If you want children to behave a certain way, it is easy to teach them what is expected if you reward them for the expected behavior. At the same time, you pay no attention to the behavior that is not expected.(unless it is hurting someone). So in the end...what is the point in doing undesireable behavior if they are not getting rewarded? And why do bad things if there is no attention paid to it?

Since you included the word "should" in your question, that gives the expectation the possibility of being an opinion. You reward a dog for doing his business outside, because the repetition of getting rewarded makes him repeat the action. You expect the dog to go outside...the dog doesn't care where he goes. You reward a child, in the form of an allowance, for doing chores, to teach them responsibility. You reward civil servants for their bravery, to thank them for a good job

My husband has the same philosophy, and we go round and round with it. You reward some things that should be expected because that is what you want. IF you "expect" your dog to go out side to use the bathroom the dog may not "expect" the same thing. To get what you want, and to not cause any upset feelings in the dog...you reward his "good behavior" when he goes outside. This way you both get what you like and are both happy. Savy?

Well in This day and Age Too many people do Not do the Things that should be expected.
Take waitresses for example probably the first to Get the Shaft of rewards for Not doing their Job correctly.
so you should be appreciative of the ones that do and reward them nicely :-)

It encourage people to keep doing what is expected.

Just because you expect something does not mean that it should be taken for granted.

You might expect a fireman to rescue you from a burning building and put his life on the line in the process...but why should he? If you told him that it is part of his job...he would tell you to stick it.

If you expect people to do things for you...the least you can do is to thanks them by showing some gratitude.

Standards are so low these days that anything remotely diligent or done by hard work is praised out the wazoo. This doesn't mean we shouldn't encourage people when they do something well, but they should know what excellence really is.
