I just got a betta fish and I think they are so beautiful. I was just wondering what else can you feed them besides just the betta fish food? I know they must get tired of just eating those little pellets, so I would like to know something else they could eat.

Keep in mind that bettas are carnivores, and will eat themselves to death if you let them. You should only feed about as much as their eyeball each day, and skip a day or 2 each week. Overfeeding leads to potbellied betta who tend to suffer from bloat, and tend to die on you. Plus the more food than goes in the tank/bowl the faster the water goes bad.

They will eat a cooked pea without the outer shell of the pea, but it's basically betta elax. Which every few weeks is a good idea to clean out their system, but it not a good long term food. Also they really only need about 1/2.

Ideal foods are freeze dried blood worms, and brine shrimp. The process sterilizes the food, and it keeps longer. Live, and frozen foods are great, and betta love them but carry the risk of disease. Raising brine shrimp from eggs is generally pretty safe unless you put to many in the tank.

PS- I find many betta who have never tried blood worms won't try them at 1st. Give the betta a day to fast then try them again. Once he eats one he'll eat them like crazy.

They go absolutely nuts over live bloodworms. I used to treat my betta to a few every once in a while. The only problem with those is that even the smallest portion you can buy in the pet store is way too much to feed your betta in a week -- and the live worms don't even live that long.

You keep them in the fridge to slow down their metabolisms, but it's hard to keep them alive anyway. And they smell NASTY.

You also don't want to overfeed -- AT ALL. Feed very sparingly, and make sure the betta eats EVERY worm you give it. Otherwise, the worms will burrow in the gravel and die. Then your tank's water gets polluted.

If you don't want to deal with all of this just to give your betta a nice treat, then stick with the pellets. The betta won't go after them as enthusiastically as it does with live worms, but they sure make feeding time a heck of a lot easier.

I will tell you what Betta's absolutely go CRAZY for.. they LOVE sweet peas!! If you get a small bag of sweet peas, and just give him maybe 1 or 2, put the peas in a cup of hot water so it gets the ice and whatnot off, peel the covering off of it, and mush the pea up good, and give it to him.. they love green vegetables.. lettuce, sweet peas, etc.. If you don't want to give him that, I give mine TetraColor, to help enhance his color, they'll eat that, too. Personally, my betta's have never showed much love for those pellets as it is.. but if you want to give him some sweet peas they Love them, trust me.. just don't over load on them because he'll get bloated!! =)

If you switch food brands, it may take some time for him to get used to it because buying them from the store we don't know what the fish farm has raised them on eating, so give him some time if you do switch from pellets to flakes of some sort, he won't starve himself, so he Will eventually eat flakes if you switch, but the Sweet Peas will definately be a healthy treat for him.

Goodluck with your fishy friend =)

While I've never tried it, I have heard that betas enjoy a single pea or a sliver of cucumber. Just be sure that you take out any part that is not eaten so it doesn't rot!
