I have had the same, so now that you got it out there I will answer it. Most of those that are christians do not know that both sayings are nearly the same.

Turn the other cheek as most know means to not retaliate but be ready to take it again and learn from it. This does not mean that if someone hits you hard you are to just let them do it again. This has a lot more to do with what is said than the physical.

Eye for an eye does not mean to take a life because someone else has done so. Not at all. What it truely means is that you should be willing to give an eye or tooth to someone olse that needs it. Meaning that you should be willing to give of what you have to help others. No matter how poor you are you do have something that will help another.

Religious leaders in the christian churches have been miss stating the eye for an eye and tooth for tooth for a long time and deliberately so. Religions teach by fear and hatred.

It appears to me that your question has been posted.

If you are from the middle east perhaps the eye for an eye is correct. However, if you love Jesus Christ you would believe Him. He said, " Turn the other cheek" Sometimes the reward doesn't come at the time of the incident!

"An eye for an eye" is from the Old Testament.
"Turn the other cheek" is from the New Testament.
When Jesus died for your sins the old biblical teachings were invalidated, so to speak.
Any true Christian, any follower of Christ, would do as He teaches.

An eye for an eye is the creation of goods and services for the good of mankind with creativity and loving feelings so that others will admire the creativity with loving feelings as success in worshiping God on planet earth.
Turn the other cheek is to forgive one another since we are living human kind and not people of different races of racsim as success in worshiping God on planet earth.
That is what the expression on worshiping God is all about on planet earth.
Not in clubbing one another who is living human kind with revenge in planet of apes.
The blunders and slip-ups with human errors with misinterpretation, miscommunication, communication failures with communication break-down that got everyone into throwing pots and pans at one another in making a mess and monkey out of ourselves with self lack of knowledge in planet of apes.

Seems like a sensible question to me: do you defend and strike back or do you forgive. Good question.
