A frank mark refers to the special machine-stamping of postage costs on an envelope or label to be attached to an item to be mailed. Such franking machines are usually used by small businesses. A frank mark also refers to the machine-stamping the post office makes to 'cancel' postage stamps on items of mail so that the stamp cannot be reused. It often has the date, time, and place of mailing on the frank mark. If you use the term 'franked envelope' in a Yahoo! image search, you will see some fine examples.
