Yeah I agree with navyprincess, when I was prego, I was instructed the same thing, because the dr knows exactly what to do and how far to insert the fingers, so you should let the dr check for his/herself...you don't wanna do something that shouldn't be done.........

Don't check your own cervix for dilation. Hands are full of germs and all sorts of bacterias. You don't want to risk infection to your baby by checking yourself.

As far as visualizing how big 1 cm, 2 cm, etc is... grab yourself a ruler. One side is in inches and the other is in cm. This will give you a perfect idea on how big dilations are.

I would not be able to tell you how it dilation "feels"., but I can say that 1 centimeter is about the width of your index finger, so 2 centimeretrs is the width of 2 fingers..and so on. Hope this helps

Well I dilated to a 4 before I ever went into labor ( I sat there for like a week) I felt small contractions like tightening but nothing bad. Some say it hurts but I did not hurt till I got to a 6 and not bad enough till I got to a 9 when I begged for an epidural. ( which did not work!!)

Ps Do not check your own cervix becasue it can force you into labor

It's kind of hard to feel on your own, but it can be done. If it's as open as your finger, it's about a centimeter. Two whole fingers is about three centimeters. You do want to make sure your hands are extremely clean. Good luck!

Don't touch your cervix. Doctors and midwives only touch you after cleaning their hands thoroughly and wearing sterile gloves. If you start poking around up there, you may cause an infection, or injure yourself.

Don't check your own cervix while pregnant. Its too sensative and should only be done by a dr. It can cause infections, and irritate your cervix.
