Maybe he doesn't want them to judge you wrongly.
What ever it is, this relationship is not a healthy one, and you should cut it now before it gets any worse.
We get into relationships to be happy; you don't seem happy.

Point blank, either he feared his parents would tell him to cut you loose if he told them you two were back together (due to things being too instable) OR he himself wasn't sure if you two would weather the next storm. Either way, things don't look good. It's never a good sign when a dude isn't COMPLETELY owning your relationship - regardless of the reasoning behind not doing so. He could be a great guy, and you'll could've had lovely times but the on-again off-again thing added to him being reserved (and 4 months is a significant amount of time) just says to me that maybe you should call it quits with this one.

There's nothing too wrong in this picture. He hasn't told them you got back together because they probably give him a hard time about you fighting. I'm assuming you are under 18? Sometimes it's hard to deal with constant criticism so he would rather them think that you are not together than to hear it all the time.

It sounds as though either, when he met up with you this time, he just didn't feel the same as he used to and realised that you were not the girl for him or his race/religion prohibits him from marrying you and he has finally decided that, as there is no future in the relationship, you may as well call it a day. Either way, I am sorry that you have been hurt and I hope that one day you meet someone who is able to have an open and long term commitment with you. All the best.

Sounds like his family doesn't like you and he doesn't want to hear them complain about him taking you back. They probably don't like you because everytime you all fight they only hear his side and they think you're a *****. He needs to be a man and tell them you all are back together, and quit complaining to them everytime you all fight.

His parents may not approve or they may advise against a relationship that isn't steady. Where your family may accept a relationship for whatever it is. If his parents don't approve of a 'disfunctional' relationship, he may be avoiding telling them just to avoid having to listen to a lecture
