I have interviewed for a position where I think the job is mine if they can get it worked into the budget for next year. I sent a thnk you email a month ago for meeting with me. Now I want to send a follow up email just to let them know I am still here and interested in the position should they get it into the budget.

My question is how do I word this email without sounding pushy?

Dear Mr. Smith,

My name is John Crapsworthy. We met a couple of months ago regarding the position as a toilet inspector. At the time you indicated that there may be the possibility of a position opening up in that area in the New Year. I just thought I would let you know that I am still very interested in this kind of work, and should such a position become available, I would very much like to be considered.

I'll follow up with you in the New Year to see if anything has become available.

Thank you once again for your consideration. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

John Crapsworthy

As an employer myself, I don't see this kind of thing as pushy, I see it is promising. I will always look to hire the person that goes the extra mile. I don't think an email now and a follow up in mid January would be too pushy at all. If you word it in the way I have shown you, you leave the door open for one more email in January some time. You can even mention in that one that you had promised to follow up. When you do you are then confirming in their mind that you keep your word and follow up when you say you will. Another positive trait they should like.

"Regarding the position pending budget approval: I recently interviewed with you and indications are you are indeed interested in my joining the team. I do not wish to sound impatient or "pushy" as this would not be the case. I do want to assure you I remain interested and anxious to work with you. Time passed has not dampened my enthusiasm. Once your budget is decided I would savor the opportunity if I am still under consideration. Thank you."

Tricky. The first thing I'd do is get a blank sheet of paper and write down all the reasons why you would like to know -- business-related, personal, emotional. That may help you find out what you want to say. If someone comes to me with a reason why they want some information, I'll usually find it easier to supply them with that info. It's always useful to find a fretext to give them a little prod -- a reminder that you're still there.
