It depends on how long you are going for. If only a week I would not do more than 2. If you like nature and adventure the Big Island is awesome. You will have to pick one side or the other. It is very large hence Big Island. I personally would stay on the Hilo side of the island. There is a lot to do from hiking the volcano and many trails to seeing the black sand beaches. I like to plan my own trip so go to tripadvisor.com and type in the big island they have a fabulous forum. Another great book to get is The big island revealed or they have one for each island. I would just check them out from your local library.
I would also suggest the island of Oahu if you want a little of everything. It is slightly less expensive than the others but the most populated. If you stay in Waikiki I would only stay at the Hilton Hawaiian hotel. The beach there is awesome. The hotel is pricey though. Their are other nice hotels but much of the beach is eroded. The north shore is a must to visit. With it's great waves, sea basking turtles and just over all beauty. Hanauma bay is a great spot too and is IMO the most picturesque of the island.
I don't think you can go wrong with any island they are all fantastic. I think Maui is my least favorite just doesn't quite have that lush tropical feel to me like Kauai or the others do. I have been to all of them except Molokai.

Well, if I had to pick 2... it would be the one that is geologically still developing, Hawaii, the Big Island w/the black sand beaches and volcanic lava flows - and then Kauai, the first island developed with its lush natural beauty.. Enjoy - it is special
