Singapore is not a police state...Its true they are really strict but its far from being a police state. I have been to Singapore several times and love it for what it is. Its a great place for shopping and eating and has a really cool colonial feel. I would never plan a trip directly to/for Singapore but if your trekking through SE Asia and happen to be in the neighborhood its worth a day or two.

I've travelled a fair bit and I'm always happy when I land in Changi and a sense of calm settles in me again. Ah, home! (Then the humidity hits you...) I've never really felt unsafe here even while walking outside in the wee hours and it's something I never truly appreciate until I go to another country. Of course I remind myself that I love living here also because I'm the majority race, middle class and all that. But would I feel this way if I were underprivileged? Perhaps not. Sometimes when I'm overseas I perceive some racial snubs and I'm quickly put in my place by Singaporean friends who are of the other races that that's not even half of what they face in Singapore. The country's not perfect but it's home. And all those people who sit behind their computers critisizing their own country in online forums should just get off their butts and do something about it.

There is a favorite quote among the travel books about Singapore - Singapore is a "fine" city.

Singapore is a clean & green country and we gladly welcome any tourist to visit our small but well-equipped homeland. Many Singaporeans and foreigners named our nation as a "FINE" country because our government imposes a lot of fines and rules but in fact, we're really a Fine = Great country. It is really nice nation that we have live in. No racisms, no riots, no wars but PEACE in Singapore.
We have so-called 4 big races as Chinese, Malays, Indians & Caucasians. And some minority races like Indonesians, Filippinos, Siamese, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Bruneis & etc.
And because of so many different nationalities, we have many cultures and great cuisines, in turn a multi-nation community is formed in Singapore and we get to enjoy many nice & delicious delights from all the world.
Our flag consists of 2 equal horizontal sections, Red above White. In the upper left section, is 1 white crescent moon and 5 white stars forming a circle. Each feature of the flag has its own distinctive meaning and significance. Red symbolises universal brotherhood and equality of man. White signifies pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. The crescent moon represents a young nation on the ascendant. The 5 stars represents for the nation's ideals of 1) Democracy 2) Peace 3) Progress 4) Justice and 5) Equality.

Our state crest consists of a shield emblazoned with a white crescent moon and five white stars against a red background. Red is symbolic of universal brotherhood and equality of man, and white signifies pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. The five stars represent the five ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. Supporting the shield are a lion on the left and a tiger on the right. Below the shield is a banner inscribed with the Republic's motto, Majulah Singapura. The lion represents Singapore itself and the tiger, the island's historical links with Malaysia.

Lastly, I strongly encourage tourists to visit our homeland and see for yourself how strong Singapore is!

I'm from Singapore... I like it a bit more than the US. But my impression of it is that it's a nice, clean environment. Downtown is busy... That's about all I can say.

Hi, I live here in Singapore. Though it is clean, modern, cosmopolitan and high tech, it does lack that countryside feel alot. So if you plan on shopping, it will be alright. If you want the feel of fresh air, you have to look else where.

I went there for a few days with my boyfriend on the way back to the UK from NZ, stayed for couple of days on Sentosa Island and it was just what we needed for a break - the beaches a little bit fake there though. The city was good fun for a day but very busy. Lots of bargain electronics to be had if you could be bothered searching for them. the public transport system is very big and clean and efficient , especially compared to the tube in London. Good shopping and very clean streets in general.
all in all i enjoyed my time there, but i don't think i would live there - too big for me!

It's a communist - democratic country. I'd been there before, it's a cosmopolitan area but you can feel that your freedom is suppressed.
