The mule represents the democratic party and the elephant represents the republicans. This is not the only time parties have had animal mascots. The party of teddy roosevelt was the bull moose as the party was known as the bull moose party.

I think that the Dodo bird represents the Democrats and that the Moth represents the Republicans. The moth will fly right into the flame and destroy itself while the Dodo bird could come up with no way to survive and became extinct. Neither party is worthy of an eagle as their symbol.
