Try the local animal shelter, but I have to say that the holidays are not the best time to adopt an animal, especially if it's your first pet. You all need time to get used to each other and the cat needs time to get used to you and your house, under normal circumstances, not when things are busy and noisy around the holidays. The people at the shelter will probably tell you something similar. It's important to give a homeless animal a good home, so congratulations for that, but maybe just wait till after the holidays when things have settled down again. There will also be a fee of some sort to adopt the animal, plus you will need to have it spayed or neutered and make sure it has its shots. Best wishes!

looking for a free cat? yes check your local paper. if you decide to give a cat as a gift maybe make a gift certificate up and say you are going to get them one. the person who is getting the cat should pick it out and make sure it is what they want.
shelters are a great place to get a cat, it won't be free but it will most likely be fixed and up to date on all of its shots.

You might want to wait until after the holidays to get a pet. And then go to your local shelter and pick up a cat. Also, if you can't afford to pay for a cat, you probably shouldn't get one. Pets are an expense (food, toys, bedding, vet visits). If you can't afford one, please do not adopt one.

Look on www.petfinder.com they have tons to chose from and they are only about 10.00 or so. They aren't allowed to be put on there for free it is dangerous for the animal. I have found homes for about 25 cats this year through petfinder. Good Luck to you I hope you find your kitty.
