Sure.....why not.

One work of fiction is no better than the other.

I say he can swear his oath on a Harry Potter book.

A. Read Article VI of the United States Constitution, "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

B. When Congress is sworn in, they are sworn in as a group at their seats. No bible, or any other book is used at that time. If a member of Congress wishes, they can have a small ceremony later on for PR purposes.

C. No where does the Constitution say that the bible, or any other book has to be used for swearing in of any official of the United States. It is done as a matter of tradition, but it is the personal choice of the person being sworn in.

D. Questions like these show the main reason I do not vote Republican.

Would it be sick if a Jewish congressman swore on the Torah? What exactly is the point of swearing on the Bible if you're not Christian? It'd mean just as much to them as if you swore an oath on the Qur'an.

Well...at first I was totally against it but on reflection..I'd rather he swear on whatever book he finds holy since if he doesn't believe in the Bible he'd have no qualms about rejecting that oath but perhaps if he took is oath on the Koran he might actually think twice about selling national secrets to Iran.

Why wouldn't you want him to swear on the holy book that means something to him? Swearing on the bible would have no more meaning to him than swearing on Reader's Digest. Swearing on the Koran would be a binding promise in his belief system. Since our country's heritage claims to respect the religion of others we would be hypocrites to demand he swear on the Christian bible.
