Because the pope( I don't remember which one but this was a LONG LONG time ago) decided that since people were celebrating the winter solstice (with some of the things that we now use to celebrate the season) which of course had no real religious reason or meaning and he did not like the pagan overtones. There were also people that wanted to celebrate the birth of christ but they were uncertain as to when they should do this. The Pope of that time combined the two celebrations and that is why Christmas is celebrated near the time of the winter solstice. I also agree that Christ was born in the spring. According to what I have surmised it was alomst around the same time of the year as Easter or passover I guess would be a better thing to say

for one it's already in the bible that christ was born on december 25th, and for the millionth time Da Vinci code is FICTION, sounds real, feels real, but NOT real! Goodness, no wonder the churches goes against this book, it's a good novel no doubt, but don't be confused, this is no historical crap that you read in school, it's a novel and it's fiction. And besides, if the popes did changed the birth day, would it make a difference? Heck, I bet we'll be celebrating his birthday in spring if they change it anyway.

I've read the book . According to it Constantine fused Christianity and egyptian symbols to form a religion which was acceptable to both the sides. So 25 December is the birthday of Mirthas (egyptian god) and that is why christmas is celebrated on 25 december instead of mid March

Well, for starters, The DaVinci Code is a book that does not respect historical realities. It has a historian who tells lots of inadequacies about history in general, let alone about Jesus.
My personal guess is that Jesus was not really born on December 25th, since the Bible does let us know one detail about when the angel appeared to Mary in the
Hebrew sixth month. Think at the fact that the first month, for Israel, was our March-April, and count 9 months from that sixth month the angel appears to Mary. It doesn't give you December 25th, for sure, but nor does it give Springtime.
Anyway, and I'm telling you this from a Christian viewpoint, Jesus, my Lord, wasn't "born" 2,000 years ago. He existed from the beginning, as God. Celebrating His coming to us on December 25th or on any other date makes Him happy. That is, IF we celebrate Him. It also gives us comfort to celebrate His coming to be God with us=Emmanuel, because we know that He loves us and that He would do anything for our good.

Britt, hate to tell you but Jesus was born in the spring. There was someone else who mentioned a pope and most of that is true. Pope's liked to control their people and by setting Dec 25 aside for the "supposed": birth of Christ they would have all the peasants in their hands and their coffers (church).

The Da Vinci Code is a load of crap. Jesus was born on Christmas. Read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the bible and you will fine it.

Hope I helped! Have a very Merry Christmas!
