Has anyone been left mentally ill after a relationship with another mentally ill person? Recently friends with someone who lied to me about most things and treated me badly. Anyone advice on trying to get over this?

I think once we hang around someone long enough we tend to take on a little essence of them (habits, hobbies, interests, personality traits) and it takes a few weeks to shake that off.
It'll go away...but it'll take some time.

I work with ppl that r mentally ill and for obvious reasons u cant "catch" their illness. A mental illness is a chemical imbalance of the brain and with the right medications it can be controlled. If u r feeling a little scattered, or out of sorts that could have been the strain of the relationship on u. When in a relationship and it gets rocky we tend to over react, blow things out of proportion and things that the other person says or does can hurt us emotionally. I would suggest some councelling to mend some of the hurt that u may be feeling. Also it would answer ur questions on how u r feeling mentally. Most mental illnesses begin when ppl r in their early to late teens, but sometimes ppl dont even know they have an illness till they r adults. Depression can hit at any time. Maybe look back in ur past to see if u have felt what ur feeling now in ur life. Good luck!!!

It takes time...and yes they can make you crazy, but once you are away from them and their crazy ways...Your senses will eventually restore (unless of course you were crazy before...lol).
I can't say you won't always be affected by the past you spent w/ them, but it will be what you make of it...make it a positive learning experience...one in which you learned and can detect the signs sooner. So you will know what to avoid in the future.

Its been a year and almost 3 months for me, and I'm just now starting to feel like me again, or getting used to being me again, or the horrifying memories don't sneak up and take me breath away any more. But, I still cringe when my phone rings and its his name on the caller ID. I always let my vm get it...that way if he's in an ugly mood I don't have to deal with it. I'm sure he'll eventually stop calling one day. People say tell him to stop calling, but you don't poke crazy people with sticks and provoke them, you never know how far they will go to get back to you. People who have never dealt personally with one wouldn't understand the instability of their mind set and their behavior.

people with mental illness effect everyone around them in a negative way. some a little, some a lot.

if your having problems 'shaking it off' (the negative effects of someone with mental illness), then seek counseling. they will help.

I always said that the "crazies" are contagious. But there are so many fruitcakes in the world sometimes its difficult to tell what's normal. Maybe if you set standards of behavior for yourself that you will stay within, that might help. You also might want to watch your attitude.

u have to get away from that person if they affect u like that, people come and go in our lives, some pleasant experiences some not so pleasant. look beyond all this, accept whatever happened, and grow from it, as every misfortune is an opportunity for change in our lives.
