Hey Karthik,
Computer Prices have come down drastically. So time to go for a new one
P4 3Ghz, Intel MotherBoard, 512 MB RAM, a mouse and a keyboard and dont forget to buy a new ATX cabinet. U can use your old hard disk or u can buy a new one. Thats enough to upgrade ..
If you want to go for a more cheaper upgrade, go for a AMD Processor with ASUS motherboard. This combination is the best one.

Micrsoft has dicontinued support for pre-Windows XP SP2 products.
For some reason people become very attached to their computers. I had to pry the very old Packard Bell computer from my girlfriend's parents hands and force them to buy a newer one.
The fact of the matter is that technology has a shelf life.
There is a select group of consumers that will buy technology just at the minimum technology standard. This is where the three year cycle life of a computer comes from.
With all of that said, you do not want to spend too much or too little.
For example, buying the latest and greatest computer now will lock you into that current technology, but when something new comes out, you'll probalby not want to buy the updatd technology.
If you spend too little, the technology you purchase may be obsolete in three years and you will be back in the same place you are now.
Here is what I recommend.
1. Put money away so that in the next three years you will have about $3,000. So in three years if you want to buy a new computer, the financial factor is not an issue. You can than have your choice to purchase a Desktop or Notebook.
2. For your current situation, just purchase a computer. If money is an issue you can purchase a refurbished computer from www.ibm.com (IBM Certified Used Equipment) or www.dell.com or another reputible manufacturer.
3. If you want to purchase a new computer, go to a local store such as Best Buy or Citcuit city if you have one in your area. This will allow you to get your computer easily serviced when things go wrong. Also, purchase a three year warranty. If you do not have a Best Buy or Circuit City make your the outlet store offers in-house service (Service at the Location, not your home).
4. Any computer you buy should have one of the following microprocessors:
Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core Duo, Intel Core 2 Duo or (AMD Equivalents)
5. Make sure the computer has at least 1GB of RAM, unless you are getting a computer with Windows Vista (than 2GB of RAM)
6. Hard disk sizes vary. 80GB or more should be fine for you. Additional storage is generally cheap.
Good luck with your decision.

you can get a new optical mouse for $12 at any retail store!
Should you get a new pc? not for a new mouse! Ask your self this, is your pc doing what you need it to do? are there new programs out there that you need to run? then get yourself a new one! if not, keep plugging away on that old one.
My father, who died back in 1998, was a no nonsense guy. I m older than the rest of my siblings, so I was allready moved out of the house by this time. but for years, my dad would always have the latest and greatest PC in the living room which my step-mother and siblings all used and enjoyed. In my dad's bedroom/office, my dad's personal machine was an an old 8088 IBM PC with a 20 meg hard drive and a dot matrix printer he purchased back in 1982. It had dos 3.2 on it, no windows. It wasn't even capale of running windows 3.1. He refused to upgrade it all of those years caiming "it does what i need it to do." which was word processing and keeping financial records on.
So it's up to you!

Get a new pc. I would recomend a dell. Whatever you do don't go with eMachines or gateways. I have an emachine. You get what you pay for. We got ours because it was cheap. Now we regret we didn't get a dell. If you look at the governments pc's they're hps or dells. You should get at least 512mb of ram. For the new vista systems you should have about 1 or 2gb of ram.

Time for an upgrade!! A new pc or a laptop either can be a choice you have to make. Research and figure out which is more applicable for your use. And go for it.
