There really is no definite answer, like you say everyone is different. Also, even if you try to use the time you started as a guideline it still isn't a guarantee.
I was 12 when mine started, my sister was 16 and her daughter was 12/13. My other sister was 16/17 and her daughter was 14 1/2.
Also, looking at all of us there was no particular pattern as to why some of us started at 12/13 and the others 16/17.
Just be prepared and talk to her about it, maybe let her know where the pads are for when it happens. My mum never talked to me, it was a big shock and I was embarrassed to talk to anyone. But don't make too much of a big deal about it, it might not happen for another 2/3 years.
I do remember my sisters saying there were "signs" before their daughters started. But again this could vary from person to person (i.e. what the signs are and how long the signs showed before....).

If she's slim she might be a bit late. I'm quite tall and skinny and I've always been that way. So I didn't start until I was about to turn 16!
13 might be the average but she could start at 11 or 17 without being abnormal.
Merry Christmas. :)

Every one is different but the norm is between 11 and 16. I was nine but my sister was 15 before she got hers. The mood swings may well be associated with the onset of her becoming ready to get her period. But then again all adolescents suffer mood swings!

My daughter will be 13 in march and she is just starting to get the mood swings. Her hormones are going crazy, I think she is about to start. I only got myne when I was 16 though. I think everyone's different. Good luck with it.

well it can range from age 9-18. yep, as late as 18. but now girls are starting their periods younger and younger. my docs say from the injection of the hamburgers and cows and such. i'm 12 and still haven't started. it may start this year or next. but keep in mind in may not come untill she is her teens or as late as 18 yrs old. and yes the average age is around 13. oh yea, and all my best friends who've started were 12, 11, and 13. hope this helps! ~ Lucy
