The only recorded literary work, with the title 'The Rivals', is a play (a comedy of manners in five acts) by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. It was first performed on 17 January 1775.
..Initially a critical and commercial failure, 'The Rivals' was promptly withdrawn, revised and rewritten. When the play reopened on 28 January 1775, it won significant critical acclaim, and soon became a 'runaway hit'.
