Before two months of age, a baby usually will not sleep through the night. "Sleeping at night" is usually defined as six hours of uninterrupted sleep. Before that, you probably would NOT want them to, because they need to feed every two-three hours (more so if breastfed, but also some formula fed babies as well). Even if your baby is sleeping, you need to wake them up after three hours to make sure they are getting enough calories. Unfortunately there is not much you can do other than to help establish their circadian rhythm. That means, darkening the room/house at night, making things quiet, showing that there is a difference between night and day. In the day, do the opposite, let the light shine in. But DO let them sleep as much as they want at this stage - they need it. You're just going to have to ride things out for a bit and then things will correct themselves on their own. Now if it is a six month old, that is a different story. Good luck

all new borns are different some sleep all night right from the start others wake up every 1-2 hours. Patience and love. sleep or rest during the day when they do. Don't worry about what the house looks like you will get caught up sooner or later. Your health is important so that you can take care of the child properly. If you have a spouse ask them to do the feedings for you or help around the house in other ways. It does get better it just takes time.
Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

my newborn is 2 weeks old yesterday and It was so hard in the beginning because she would not sleep at all during the night!!! I brought my recliner into the baby's room and I sleep there. At first I put her down in her crib to sleep and she just screamed!! It was hard to wake up from full sleep at 3:00am and have to get up...etc. So I tried keeping the car seat on the floor next to me. She starts out in her crib then when she cries I change her then set her in her car seat. I propped the bottle up with her blankets so she can eat and I wouldn't have to hold her and fall asleep with her in my arms. She just spits the bottle out when she's done anyway. You can also rock the car seat with your feet back and forth. This is a great way to get some Zs. As she gets older she will begin to sleep more trust me.

You can't. Newborns have to eat often and they do not know the difference between night and day.

Newborns only sleep through the night on TV. Real newborns need to be fed every couple of hours around the clock. If you're nursing, baby will need to feed about every 2 hours at this stage. There *might* be one slightly longer stretch of sleep per day.

Bring baby into bed with you. (Just follow safe cosleeping guidelines.) This will help everyone get more sleep.

Routine, Routine, Routine. I also suggest an extra large feeding at bedtime. You may want to try to keep the baby at bay so they will want to eat a little more before bed.

I started giving my children (I have 4)rice cereal with formula mixed to almost a watery consistancy and I'd SPOON feed them a little and then top them off with a bottle! Every one of them was sleeping through the night by a month old...
