I know that there are products that you should spray on suede shoes & boots before you go outside, but I don't know if that would be good for coats. Please help

Get the aerosol can of suede and leather protector. Most leather shops including Wilsons Leather in the mall carry it.

There are usually suede coat sprays at the stores - ask him where he bought it from. I love suede but I'm not buying it anymore because of the way it reacts in rain and snow - once it gets a spot on it, you can't get it out.

This year I bought a suede coat that claims it is washable so I bought a larger size. I have not worn it yet but I am skeptical about stains coming out of suede because I love suede and have seen a lot of dirty cuffs. If your new coat is not washable, there is no way it won't build up stained sleeves and cuffs until the year you give it up and stop wearing it. Any honest Dry Cleaner will agree with me. Wear it for special occasions or enjoy it while you can.

Same stuff.
I personally would never wear suede in the rain ever and only sparingly in the snow.

The same product can be used for coats, shirts, pants, etc... It doesn't matter what the clothing is, the material is still the same.
