I wanted to be a social worker and work with children. I got my masters degree in social work and spent ten years in the field, then became a professor of social work. I am now a college administrator and use the skills I learned in those ten years every day.

I wanted to be a surgeon and started out as a psychology pre-med. After deciding that I didn't want to compete with my friends, I settled on majoring in mathematics and statistics and became an actuary for a few years. I then went to graduate school and earned a master's and doctorate and now teach at the university level. I love my career. Admittedly, part of me would like to be something like a forensic psychiatrist (from long before CSI...), but I am very happy where I am.
My advice is that you don't have to know what you want to do. You can change your mind (either while in school or once out). I highly suggest using your academic advisor as a sounding board and using other professors you feel comfortable with as mentors. Finally, explore all of the things that you think you're interested before deciding on a major. And, if it takes more than four years to graduate, that's okay.
