Many liberals portray all conservatives as ultra fanatical racist religious fascists with a sheep mentality. While many Conservatives portray Liberals as America hating terrorist appeasing handout craving communistic radicals. Is either characterization really true outside of the most extreme elements? Or is it just a dishonest attempt to discredit the ideas and opinions of the opposition?

I believe the correct answer is all the above. Throw in some people that want to get a rise out of people just for the sheer joy of upsetting them.
There is no doubt that the political divide is bigger than ever before in America's political History. Where have all the Moderates gone? Sounds like an old Peter, Paul, and Mary song doesn't it?

I believe it's a dishonest attempt to discredit the ideas and opinions of the opposition. Some days it gets so bad that I can't answer a single question, because the questions are all stabs and barbs at the other political party. The real debate questions are few and far between and you have to be quick to catch them on the first page. Since the name calling ones knock the good ones off the page so fast at times your head spins.

I think there are some people with extremist views on this site. A lot have bought into the notion that the U.S. is some kind of evil force. The exchanges remind me of schoolyard banter from when I was a kid. It is indicative of the great divide that has spread across America over the last 30 years because of the debate over the moral issue of abortion.
The country was once divided over slavery in the same way. Such divisions do not always lead to civil war, but they always impede our ability to act for the common good. Without respect for opposing viewpoints, there can be no compromise.

It's not just on Yahoo Answers, it's the way the political debate is framed throughout the media and with all the politicians. The majority of American people are in the middle of the political spectrum and all we get are people painting the other party as being way to the right or way to the left. I think that's why so many people are disenfranchised with the whole system - they don't feel like there is anybody out there who represents regular folks.

You are correct the extremist on both sides seems to be the ones asking the most assine questions. One of the things that make me ignore a lot of the questioners is their fear of posting a profile or email if they were not such cowards they should be proud of their answers sometime anonymity make people behave like complete jackasses.

I agree with you. Both sides are extemists behaving badly.
There is little or no debate, just a lot of name-calling and finger pointing and hate-blogging that only serves to irritate the other side and provoke equally childish responses. Sad!

It's the latter. The best way to attack an opponent is to attack them on issues. In this case, liberals peg conservatives as pro-war, gun fanatics, and conservatives attack liberals as tree-hugging, pro-abortionists.
