When the computer runs out of RAM, it uses part of the harddrive as 'virtual memory' - it performs the same functions, only a lot slower. If you're running out of virtual memory, it means that you don't have anywhere near enough physical memory. In addition, either your harddrive is full, or you have manually assigned very little space for memory virtualisation.
You can adjust how much of your harddrive the OS will use for this (the paging file) by right clicking on My Computer, choosing the Advanced tab, Performance options, Advanced, Virtual Memory: change.
It's a lot better all round if you just double your physical (RAM) memory. You should be looking at 512mb minimum for XP, twice that (at least) if you're playing recently released games.

Assuming you're using Windows XP:
Click Start / Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / System / Advanced tab
Under Performance click the Settings button.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Virtual Memory, click the Change button.
Under Paging file size for selected drive, put a tick next to Custom size:.
The minimum should be 1.5 times your memory size. The maximum should be three times your memory. If you continue to have problems, raise the maximum. Keep raising it until you no longer get the message.
Then click the Set button.
Or, the best solution, you could increase the amount of RAM your system has, by buying more, since the hard drive is much slower than RAM.

When your RAM cannot handle the memory requirements the game demands the system places the overflow on the hard drive (virtual memory) which is much slower than Ram memory. Increasing the RAM will help solve this problem..

My computer used to have hissy-fits like this too... i don't think it liked me having fun! Depends how much memory your graphics card has... I'd always try to buy the best graphics card you can afford. Nowadays, you can't rely on the basic 32MB most computers are supplied with...

Depending on how many things you have running prior to the game that you are playing. I would upgrade main memory, it is pretty cheap, or just reboot your system. :) Cheers

You have to stop every program you are running except your game. If it still tells you that just add a new ram memory(1gb+)
