If - Bread
If a man could be two places at one time,
Id be with you.
Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way.
If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die,
Id spend the end with you.
And when the world was through,
Then one by one the stars would all go out,
Then you and I would simply fly away
This second verse makes me cry!
Boo-Hoo..
Merry Christmas to you.

Nothing's more depressing and sad than the ballads in Les Miserable.
I Had a Dream - the last line is "now life has killed the dream I dreamed"
On my Own - best line "the world is full of happiness that I have never known"
Empty Chairs and Empty Tables - all about friends who died in the revolution "oh my friends my friends don't ask me, what your sacrifice was for, empty chairs and empty tables, where my friends will sing no more"
There are 3 or 4 dying songs (depending on whether you count the song that leads up to a suicide) and a miserable song called At the End of the Day where they point out that you're one day nearer to dying.
Miss Saigon is another treasure trove of misery.

i was about to suggest both.
as well as Ani Difranco's Joyful Girl. Fantastic tune, though it's not jazz, any jazz head would appreciate it.
Dave Matthews did a remake of it which is not much better moodwise...
i hope you're not looking for a sound track/playlist to top yourself to?
Most of Keith Jarrett's stuff tends to make you wallow in it so hard you lose yourself.: no need 4 suicide!
Anything by Kelly Joe Phelps he is absolutely the man of suicide stories in suicide songs with suicide riffs and all round suicide guitar. And he manages to be sad/depressing and Inspirational at EXACTLY the same time!
and of course 'hard not to mention Mrs Simone though you beat me to it!
good question, I hope you get to dld/research/buy some of these tunes/artists... but i guess that's the point of your question isn't it?

Two depressing numbers from yesteryear:
"Seasons in the Sun" (Terry Jacks)
"Reflections of my Life" (Marmalade)
Two very down songs for sure. I don't mind them, but I know my wife despises them. She says although she likes sad songs, too, these ones are over the top.
