I have plenty of controversial ones:

Abortionist's Daughter - Elizabeth Hyde -- the title speaks for itself, it is a book about moral dilemmas and a crime
Laughter in the Dark -- Vladimir Nabokov -- very good
Native Son -- Richard Wright-- excellent descriptions, go for it

The most controversial one is "The Painted Bird" - this book is about a boy who survives the WWII, the descriptions are really really cruel and disgusting at times. It is a book for people with strong nerves.

Then you can go for:
The Swimming-Pool Library , Alan Hollinghurst-- this book speaks openly abut gay people and their sex life...

Finally you can go for Fanny Hill: Or, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure by John Cleland which is considered to be the first British erotic novel:D

I just finished "The Ezekiel Prophecy" by Joel Rosenburg and it was really good . . . definately what I would call controversial. It combines current world events with biblical prophecy . . . I'm by no means AT ALL a bible-thumper or anything -- there is nothing overtly religious about this book (if you'd be worried about that), but it IS a page turner!!

Hi. I suggest Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" or "Love in the Time of Cholera". He is a great writer, I couldn't leave the book until i finished it. Why not trying a classic one? For Ex.: Balzac's "Lost Illusions" or Dostoevsky's "The Gambler".
