I normally need about 7 to 8 hours a night to feel really rested. I don't have too hectic a schedule, so getting to bed at a decent hour and waking up at a decent hour is not a problem. I generally don't have problems with insomnia, but sometimes my sleeping schedule gets screwy (like I go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 6am one day, the next day I fall asleep at 3am and get up at 9am, stuff like that) and sometimes I don't get enough sleep. Any suggestions on how to get a good night's sleep every night? Like what time I should wake up or go to bed, what kind of pillows should I use, what should i do or not do before going to bed, etc etc etc.
Also, I don't want to use any drugs or medication, so no suggestions of that sort, please. Thanks.

Quite right, tranquilizers are murder.

Good hard, trustworthy mattress (be picky) with proper back support, try and keep regular hours for sleep if at all possible. Go for comfort and peace and quiet.

A daily routine based around regular meals and activities
will help you sleep because you know where you are in your diurnal cycle. Shift workers sometimes have terrible problems adjusting to their hours for this reason.

Food matters. Don't eat fatty/too-spicy foods, sugar, or anything else which might keep you feeling restless during the night.

start walking or doing some kind of regular excercise. before bed, take a warm bath or shower. heat some milk dont let it boil, but let it get hot, drink that. there are some natural things too, like melatonin, which is something your brain may not be producing enough of, or catnip tea, or valerian root capsules, the tea is bitter. turn on your alarm clock, that way you will wake up at the same time.
good luck..

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

Do physical labor, I personally work in my garden every day shoveiing, pulling weeds, turning soil, using a wheelbarrel. Not only does it make your tired it is also relieves stress.
