Actually I think a bagpipe is a freaky scottish metaphor for a musical instrument.

I do love music, and bagpipes can be done quite well. Still, they didn't come by their reputation lightly.

It is an embarrassment to just as many scots as anyone else let me tell you. All it is, is an indian snake charmer's "tooter" stuck into a tartan bag and designed to make a loud noise. To this day, that is why the best bagpipes are made in Pakistan.

This particular instrument was designed to drive the Scottish troops into a frenzy of blood lust, whilst striking fear into the hearts of the fuzzy wuzzy enemy. And by Jove, it did THAT all right.

In common with most Scots, I like to hear Pibroch ( which is a great art form) but 90% of bagpipe players are unmusical oafs, i find. Dressed up like tins of shortbread.

Bagpipes are a class of musical instrument, aerophones using enclosed reeds. The term is equally correct in the singular or plural, although pipers most commonly talk of "pipes" and "the bagpipe."

Its actually quite a nice instrument when played well and in a pipe band. They also have drummers that go with them. I am not really sure what they are called unfortunately.
